Post-Cape blog, plus birthday gifts and mall finds!

LaVaughn had to go to the pain clinic Wednesday for her quarterly injection, so we decided to go up on Tuesday, stay the night at the hotel and do some shopping. We stayed at our favorite hotel; Auburn Place Hotel & Suites and even got our favorite room this time! I'm going to leave out what room number it is due to the fact that I have a stalker now, but we'll leave that for another blog.

After we got checked into the room, we did our usually mall run where we were able to find some AMAZING deals -- who doesn't love out of season clearance items? Maurice's and Old Navy are our go-to store when it comes to hitting the clearance. Especially if you're looking for style and comfort. We snagged a few Christmas gifts as well -- I also got LaVaughn's other birthday gift that I've wanted desperately to get her from Hot Topic!

After we spent a couple hours exploring nearly every single store in the mall, we called it quits for the day and headed back to our room before 7 PM. We had planned on hitting up Target and Petco, but decided to go there after the injection.

We ordered take-out from Olive Garden again, only because we've been dying to try the Tour of Italy and the Northern Tour of Italy (this one was mine). Of course, it was amazing. I'm a huge fan of their Alfredo and Tortellini. The salads are mediocre, in my opinion. They're overrated $1 bags of Dole salad mix that you get from the market. Where are the baby greens?? The salads are free, so I'm not complaining.

Luckily LaVaughn's appointment went well and we were able to hit up Target (more Christmas items), Petco and Walmart for household items and more groceries than I care to admit.

Of course, we were homesick all night last night and badly missed our cats and other furry critters. It was nice to get away for a day, though, but I still prefer to be home. I'm a homebody -- nearly a shut-in!

I've stolen pictures from my Instagram to share, but they're really nothing special. Hope you enjoy!

Hawkins House Bed & Breakfast

I'm trying not to think of Sadie, but every time I start to blog about anything, I do. So, I thought it would be fun to do a recap of our weekend in Eminence 10 days ago. I was going to blog about our trip to Columbia, MO, but there's really nothing to blog about. We were on the road from 12:30 until almost 11 at night. So yeah, not too much going on there. If you want to see pictures from the day, check out my Instagram account (@MadameMagenta).

So, LaVaughn and I decided to mix things up a bit this time around and stay at a B&B for the first time ever. And it had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that every other place in town was booked for the weekend. O.o We we're originally planing on staying at a lodge in Eminence, but the Thursday before we left I called to book a room and they were completely booked up. Part of me doesn't believe this, because literally every time my aunt and uncle have stayed there, they've been the only people in the entire lodge. And that was on memorial day weekend!

Anyways, the B&B was a last resort, so I called with hopes of them having something available. To my surprise, they had ONE room available. It also just so happened to be a room with a king size bed. Score! I was also pleasantly surprised by the price, which was only $89. Every other place in Eminence is $112 and up, so we really lucked out there. Still a bit pricey for a B&B I believe, but I'm definitely no expert.

Upon arrival I was surprised by how well kept and nice the exterior of the B&B was. I wasn't, however, impressed by the location. It was like literally in the center of town. There was a saloon -- yes, a saloon -- next door, the courthouse across the street, a family diner across the street next to the courthouse and a super busy gas station/liquor store one building away across a small side street. And we had to park on the side of the road in front of the house. BAD location for parking and quiet time, excellent location for food and drinks.

I was reluctant to approach the house, as there were two older ladies sitting on the wrap around porch having a chat. As I walked close, I quietly said, "I called last night about the room." One lady replied, "Just walk around the porch and go in the side door." So I did just that. As I walked in, I was a bit shocked by how much this B&B resembled many of my Aunt Evaon's old houses. Cause that's just what it is, a house. It has everything you'd expect your everyday house to have, plus a few extras, like 3 dining tables and a small gift shop that looked like a closet had exploded -- and at the hefty price of $30 a shirt!

After I walked around, confused as to why no one was inside. Not to my knowledge, anyways. After I paced back and forth for what seemed like 15 minutes, I decided to try my luck outside on the porch again. That's when a woman came to the door that I had just walked out of and apologized. Apparently she was in the basement -- I'm assuming this is where she and her mother live? Anyways, I got checked in almost immediately after that and went upstairs to check out our new room.

I didn't have much to go on, she just said, "It's the middle door, kind of a peach color." As I made my way up the creaking staircase the wound more and more as it went up, I became confused as to which room was ours. At the top of the stairs in the mini hallway/sitting area, there stood 3 doors and not one peach in color.

I walked inside the door to my left, which was a small room with a full sized bed. I knew this wasn't it, as our room had a king sized bed. I made my way to the middle door (I know, she said middle, I had forgotten this at the time), still not a lick of peach on the door, but the interior did have a light, pinkish hue to it. Could this be it? Did she mean peach colored room and not door? It was a small room as well, but slightly larger than the first one I went inside. Still unsure that this was our room, I made my way to the room on the left. This room didn't have one touch of pink, peach, or anything light colored, but it did have a huge, king sized 4-post bed. Equipped with a sitting room and full bathroom, of course. I knew there was no way this was our room, but my hopes were high.

I finally decided to run back to the car and get LaVaughn. As we carried our two weeks worth of luggage up to the house, the host said, "After you ladies get settled, come join us on the porch for a chat." I know the same thought that was going through my head was going through LaVaughn's as well. "No thanks!" I shouted in my mind.

After I struggled for 5 minutes with out 70lb bag, I finally made it to the top of the stairs. LaVaughn inspected all of the rooms as well, which led her to being just as unsure as I was. That's when I said "Screw it!" and went downstairs to simply ask. Mine and LaVaughn's assumptions were right, it was the slightly larger room in the middle.

After making our way in the room, we were surprised by how clean it was. It had 3 large windows that opened with ease to allow the warm breeze inside. The bathroom was small, but at least it was our own and not one we had to share. The bed was unbelievably comfortable and had such a beautiful hand stitched duvet. It also had a TV with several regular and HD channels, which always ends up being our lifeline.

We were both uneasy by how quiet the room was. There was one unimaginably quiet ceiling fan that barely made a peep. We both knew this would be our downfall when it came time to sleep. Yes, we're the type that must ALWAYS have some type of noise at all times. After we got all of our stuff "put away" -- and by put away I mean smashed in the corner out of our walkway -- we decided to head across the street to the diner.

I don't believe I mentioned how incredibly terrible the weather was. The closer we got to Eminence, the worse the storms got. By the time we made it back out to the car the sky was nearly black! We drove down the road in hopes of seeing some of the things my aunt talked about, but as we drove about a mile or so down the road, it was nothing. We did stumble upon a Dollar General, which we stopped at to stock up on necessities, like spray cheese, crackers and beef jerky. After we finished, we headed back to the B&B.

We parked in the same, dangerous spot and headed across the street to the diner. This was your typical small town diner. The walls were wooden, the tables were old, and practically everyone in there was a town native and elderly. The waitress mentioned that the all you can eat catfish buffet would be open in less than 10 minutes, so we decided to go with that.

All in all the meal was good, but crazy expensive. Our buffets, drinks and dessert came to $34!

We retired to the room for the rest of the evening and watched a cops/jail marathon until 3 in the morning. I ventured to the gas station a couple different times before the 10 PM lock down to get water and coffee. We kept the windows open all night and listened to the locals argue, over what I'm not sure, it was all too muffled to make anything out. There were fireworks on several different occasions, the cops came by and got on the loud speaker to shut things up, but other than that it was a peaceful night. Aside from us, there was one one other couple in the suite next to us. They were ghostly quiet -- it was like they weren't even there!

All in all it was a good first time B&B experience. It's opened my eyes to the endless possibilities of B&B's that are all over. In some ways they're a lot more comfortable than hotels, I can see why they're so popular! Then, of course, there are downsides. Like the thought of staying in a strangers house with a bunch of people you don't know who would break in and try to kill you at any given moment.

I definitely think there will be more B&B's in our future. Hopefully some with larger TVs and noisier fans...

Time to remember 2015...

So, here we go again! It seems like my recap posts are getting closer and closer together. I addressed this last year -- time goes by far too fast anymore. I was able to slow down this year and really take in what good times the year had to offer. Of course, with good comes bad. Luckily the good outweighed the bad for the most part of the year. Lets take a look back and see what 2015 had to offer...
  • January didn't start off awesome. It was nearly the end of the month when we received the news that my uncle, Donald, passed away. He was in very bad health -- I honestly didn't think he would make it as long as he did. I spend my summers in Florida with this guy. He taught me how to ride a 4-wheeler and pick fruit with the best of them. I still wait for him to call out of the blue just to say hello. It's unreal that he's actually gone.
  • I don't know if this is buzz worthy, but we got a really bad snow storm in February and were literally snowed in for 2 weeks! I missed an entire 2 weeks of work, it was insane!
  • Now for one of the most heartbreaking times of the year. In late February, our sweet Sally became so ill that we had to have her put down. We still kick ourselves that we didn't do it sooner. Rat lovers, animal lovers in general, know how hard it is to let go of your furry friends.
  • This brings me to my next subject, losing our other 3 rattie girls. We had Melissa and Chelsea put down in the same day, Emilia made it a couple more months before she passed away in her cage. I can't even begin to talk about them. Losing them all was 4 separate and unbelievable heartbreaking times. It's never easy losing an animal, each one holds a very special place in my heart and each one of them always takes a piece of it when they go.
  • So far 2015 is sounding like a super depressing year. Lets talk about something GOOD for a moment. After losing our girls, we knew it wouldn't be long before we added new additions to our brood. That's where Leo and Louie come in. I don't know what it is, but it seems with each passing year and each new rat that we adopt, they get sweeter and sweeter.
  • Lets see, I guess my aunt's back surgery needs to make the list. I'm really, really close with my aunt, so you can imagine how difficult her surgery was for me. Luckily she did amazingly well and healed up in no time!
  • I guess this is something to remember, but LaVaughn and I tried sushi for the first time this year. That's something I NEVER thought we would do. Aside from it being a kind of crappy sushi bar, it was a decent first try.
  • Now for one of the most exciting things of the year... our new car! I still can't believe it sometimes, but we had a gorgeous 2011 Chevy Impala! It's been an amazing ride, one I feel so blessed to have. And come on, it's a Chevy!
  • July 1st probably stands out the MOST! LaVaughn and I traveled to Mount Pleasant, Iowa to witness our best friends, Doug and Kyan, get married! LaVaughn was the witness (they only needed one other) and I was the wedding photographer. We almost opted out of going due to how far away it was, but we made it happen by spending the night in a hotel the day before. Definitely one of the most memorable and exciting things ever!
  • Speaking of Doug and Kyan, we got to spend the day with them in September -- we even got to hang at their house for a while! This was a triple threat of exciting days... We got our BFBB boy and Creme Mosaic girl that day! Both were being flown in, which was super stressful. Thankfully my lovely, Doug, drove us to the airport and back twice. I love him.
  • I know this isn't really anything, but we got Una spayed this year and it was incredibly heartbreaking. We have unusual attachments to our cats, so parting with her for 2 days is just too much. At least it's done now -- no more heat cycles!
  • One last awesome thing that happened this year -- I won a photo contest! This wasn't a small contest either, it was a contest held over 4 different Facebook groups with thousands of members! Mind you not everyone entered, but still. It was exciting and something to be proud of.
As you can see, a lot has taken place this year. We've experienced new things, traveled to new places, had extremely exciting things happen in our life. It's been a good year. Of course, there's always bad things that happen in a year, always, but for the most part it was good. I don't want to say anything that will jinx 2016, so I'm going to leave it at that.

Now it's the time we've all been waiting for! What exactly DID I accomplish on my bucket list this year?? I kept my Bucket List fairly simple this year, so my accomplishments are small

What I accomplished:
  • Starting my photography business. Yes, I said it! I am now the proud owner of Megan Pritchett Photography! Before you get too excited for me, it's just in the beginning stage. I'm still putting together my portfolio, but hey, at least I have it, right? I even got to do my first OFFICIAL photoshoot this year! It wasn't a paid shoot, considering they're basically family, but it was a shoot all the same. I also have a few other small shoots, plus Doug and Kyan's wedding -- which was amazing! So I guess it's safe to say I did partially accomplish this. I wanted to start my photography business and I did just that. Yay me!
  • Buying a prime lens. I was lucky enough to be able to do this in late June. I haven't set it down since I picked it up out of the package. My 50mm 1.8g is one of the best things that's ever happened to me.
  • Using my camera in full manual. Check! I honestly don't remember the last time I used auto? It was back in January sometime. I've finally grasped the basics of my cameras setting and can now use them all to my advantage. Whoop whoop!
  • Project 365. I can say this with honor... I DID IT!! I took a picture every single day this year! Some were on my phone, some were of something horrid as a worst case thing, hell, some were even of me! But hey, a picture is a picture and I took one every single day this year. And because of that, I feel unbelievably accomplished. Now I just need to get them all uploaded before midnight!
What I didn't accomplish:
  • Traveling. I set the bar low when I said I wanted to go to the zoo this year, which didn't happen. When we hung out with Doug and Kyan all day we did drive past the zoo. I saw the sign and everything! I know that doesn't count, so I can't check going to the zoo off of my list.
I think 4 out of 5 is pretty damn good, wouldn't you agree? I didn't have outrageous things to accomplish, but they were all things that I wanted to do and luckily, I was able to do 90% of them.

Now, what you've all been waiting for. What exactly IS on my Bucket List for 2016?
  • Photography. Of course I would start with that! I want to actually get paid o 2016 for doing what I love. I just need a few more shoots for my portfolio before I can start advertising my services. This is the front runner for everything that I want to accomplish in the coming year.
  • Buy a new (better) camera body. Possibly a new lens, but I'm perfectly content with my 50 for now. My camera body is having shutter issues, so I really need to replace or upgrade before I start doing anything on a super professional level.
  • The Walking Dead Comics. I want to own an read ALL of the volumes! I have volume 1-8 and I've read 1-6. I know it's a silly thing to want, but I really want to own them all and be completely caught up on everything that Kirkman has written. Reading these comics has become a passion of mine, something I look forward to every day. It's something small and hopefully something I can accomplish.
  • Project 365. You heard it here first! I've struggled to take dynamic and professional pictures this year, but I've taken a picture every day. It's something I'm used to now and something I'm not ready to give up yet. Here's to Project 365 2016!
  • I know this will probably be another fail, but I still want to travel. I honestly don't care where I go at this point, I'm just leaving it open. I want to go to the zoo, still, so let hope that actually happens this year.
  • I'm going to be brave with the last item on my list... get a tattoo! I don't have one, I've always wanted one, so I'd really like to make it happen this year. LaVaughn and I have always wanted to go in together and get a tattoo. I think 2016 will most definitely be that year.
So there you have it, folks. That's my 2016 Bucket List. I just wonder how much of this I'll have accomplished this time next year. Only time will tell.

I raise my glass to you, 2015. You've been good, a little sad at times -- hell, there was even a couple time that I wanted to throw in the towel for good. Somehow you allowed me to prevail and for that, my hat is off to you.

Here's to 2016 and all the good that is has to offer!

Happy New Year, everyone!

-Megan

Mount Pleasant welcomes you...

I'm sure it's easy to tell by the title that we made it, safe and sound to Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Wow, what a day! Considering we didn't leave the house until almost 3, I think we made pretty decent time up here. AND we even ran into rush hour traffic in Saint Louis. Surprisingly enough we didn't encounter any bumps in the road, just the terrible traffic and one car that had blown up -- on the road!

Unfortunately, our hotel room is a little sketchy. It's super small, everything is like right on top of everything! The floors are a tad on the sticky side, the parking lot is super sketchy, and there are crumbs behind my side of the table. By crumbs I mean literal crumbs and a dried french fry.

The beds are fairly comfortable, not too soft, which I love. They were generous with their small pillows -- we each got 4, but their blanket sucks. It's like a cross between a jean blanket and a hospital blanket. I'm now wishing we hadn't been so cheap and sprung another $20 on a better room. Oh well, you live and you learn. It's not like we'll be coming back to Iowa anytime soon, if ever.

Right now we're waiting on our Pizza Hut order to be completed. Did I mention that they're literally next door? Like next parking lot over close! Aside from that I'm just anticipating tomorrow. It's going to be a BIG day for everyone involved. Not only are my two best friends getting married, but I'm going to be photographing my first wedding! This is exciting stuff. Until then...

Love & Peace
