A sick ferret is definitely not a happy ferret...

Ugh, last night was awful! Poor little Robbie was really down on his luck and just not feeling well. When he gets out to play, he always runs around and rubs himself across random items on the floor. Well, last night there was no rubbing. There wasn't even any running! He just walked straight to the kitchen and laid down. I went in there to see what he was doing, then I decided to pick him up and hold him. LaVaughn came in shortly after that and rubbed his head while I was holding him. What freaked us out the most at this time, he just laid there and took it. He even dozed off a couple times!

We automatically started following him around to see if he was going to the bathroom, eating and drinking. He went to the bathroom once while he was out and it was a bit runny and lacking. The first this that went through my mind was that he had an obstruction. We looked and looked for ferret or cat lax, but couldn't find any. That's when we had to resort to the petroleum jelly. We got about an inch of that down him and let him go.

A couple hours passed and he still hadn't eaten anything, which was really scary. Then he got up and decided to go to the bathroom. Sure enough, it was the dreaded green slime poop! Also know as the Green Mystery Virus. Or, in a more delicate term, it's called ECE. After he went to the bathroom, we were actually relieved. We decided to put him up and make him a little gruel.

For those of you who don't know what gruel is, it's 1 tablespoon of your ferrets food, 2 tablespoons of water and a tablespoon of ensure for taste, but you don't have to have it.

Right before he went to bet, he actually ate some, which was great. When we got up today, we headed to the store and picked up some Pedialyte and chicken baby food. The Pedialyte is good to add to ferrets water for hydration and the baby food is just more delicate on their systems than their regular food.

Luckily, by the time we got home, he was actually eating on his own and going to the bathroom on a regular basis. And it was nice, firm poop that was more of a normal brown color.

He's still feeling a bit under the weather, but he's already LOADS better than what he was last night. I'll keep you posted on how he's doing.

Until then, you know where to find me...

Love & Peace

Just a picture of the Pedialyte and baby food. Definitely someone everyone needs to have in their ferret emergency kit...
