The reason why I hate going to the vet...

Well today was our big appointment day for the cats. Since Zoe is FIV+ and Una had high blood sugar levels last time she was at the vet, a check up was in order. And not to mention, I've noticed Zoe has been drinking a LOT of water lately. Naturally, I went into panic mode and started doing tons of research. The thing that popped in my head was kidney disease. I just kept playing that over and over until I made myself sick.

I've also been worried about how lumpy Zoe's scar was where she had her tumor removed.

Anyways, so we're at the vet, we're waiting -- anyone who has been to the vet knows what the waiting process is like. I was a nervous wreck! Ask LaVaughn. My heart was pounding, I was sick, I know my blood pressure had to be through the roof! Our appointment was for 5PM, we got there around 4:30 and ended up getting called back around 5:25ish.

The vet talked to us before she did any labs, asked us why we were there and wrote down some information. She took Una back to draw her blood first, then she brought her back for her exam. She got Zoe after that and took her back for her labs. She brought Zoe back and did an exam on her as well. Thankfully she didn't feel anything on Zoe's tummy, just lots of scar tissue from where she took so much fat.

Then the real waiting game started! It seemed like we were back there for hours! It didn't help that it was late and that there was an older couple there with 5+ cats that all had some type of URI. The vet and techs were in and out of that room up until after we left.

She came by once and told us Una's blood sugar was still high and that she wanted to run a thyroid test. Everything else of Una's was fine. About 20 minutes later -- this is around 6:25 by now, they supposedly close at 6:30 -- a lady came in with some Hill's Prescription samples of weight management dry food. I asked her if Zoe's results were back yet, then she replied "The vet will be in to discuss everything with you." My heart sank.

The vet came in a little while later and started explaining the results. She started by saying that Zoe's kidneys were showing some signs of distress. Her CRE was 3.2 and her BUN was 74. These are both too high and are signs of kidney disease. Luckily her phosphorus was good, that's great, but the other news was just as I expected. Una's thyroid was higher than it should be for her age. It was at 4.4 and the max is like 4.8. Una is only 8, so it's too high. She put her on a half of a pill once daily to (hopefully) get the numbers down.

Then she started bringing in lots of Hill's Prescription samples, plus two 4lb bags of food and canned food. She explained so much to us, I didn't even know which way was up. Luckily LaVaughn caught most of it. I'm not going to go into too much of what she said, so to make a long story short, both cats are on two diets that are polar opposites. Una needs high, high protein and low carbs, Zoe needs mild protein and low, low phosphorus. It's just like, oh my god. This food is also $24 per 4lb bag. Yikes, right? The cans are well over $1 each, but that's not as bad, considering we've been buying grain free foods, so they're all over that anyways. I'm just hoping and praying they eat this food. :(

This is why I hate going to the vet. I go there wanting to get good news, but I always expect bad news which usually it is. I'm so depressed right now. I'm sick, sad, tired and I feel like I want to hurl myself off of a cliff. I'm trying to think of the bright side, it could have been worse. It can ALWAYS be worse. Una's BS could have been higher, she could have to be in insulin immediately. She could have also been in full swing hypothyroidism. Zoe's kidneys could have been in much worse shape, she could have had another tumor. Things could have been worse, so I'm really trying to look at things that way.

In other news, we stopped at Hasting's on the way home. Everything of theirs is like 50% off now, it's insane. We got a couple True Blood POPS! for $5 each, which is a steal. The real winner is LaVaughn's Batman jacket that she got for just under FIVE dollars! I took the jacket up front and asked how much it was because it didn't have a price on it. She said they were $20, so she put a $10 price on the jacket. When we went to check out, the lady cut that price in half as well making it $5, I couldn't believe it. It was a total win.

So yeah, that's that. It's so late right now, I don't even know why I'm blogging. We didn't get out of the vets office until after 7, so it's nearly 11PM right now. I need to go. I need coffee and a xanax.

Here's a look at our new food:

And our new True Blood POPS!:

Saying goodbye to your manhood...

I called last week and scheduled an appointment for Loras to be neutered. His mom's joey is OOP now and she'll most likely be going into heat soon, so he NEEDED to be neutered as soon as possible.

LaVaughn had a nail salon appointment at the same time as his neuter, so I dropped her off and went to the vet on my own. Not fun, LaVaughn, not fun. Luckily everything went well and he's doing just fine. Hopefully next week we can get Nubbins neutered!

In POP! news, our Box Lunch Exclusive Regina arrived today. I love her!! She's quickly becoming one of my most favorite POPS! and I have a lot of favorites. Now all we need is the Hook with both hands (and a replacement Hook) and we'll have the whole set! Aside from the Comic Con Regina, but she's $200, so no thanks.

I guess that's all for now. Just a quick update on the happenings. We're off to the vet with the girls tomorrow for a check up and lab work. Wish us luck!

Here are some pics from today:

What's been going on...

So, lots has taken place over the last 10 days since I've blogged. I've had some time to blog, but I'm keeping my mind pre-occupied with other things lately, things I actually enjoy more than writing. So, let me start with the most exciting news (to me).

We found a kitten. I know, I know, we do NOT need more cats, nor do we want more, but some jerk dropped a kitten off (maybe more) next to our mailbox. We were driving home I want to say Thursday before last and there she was. LaVaughn got out of the car and chased her down, then we brought her down to the house.

She's young, probably no older than 3 months and was super skinny. She had some eye irritation going on and started sneezing quite a bit over the weekend, so I called Monday and made her vet appointment for Thursday. Her check-up went good, aside from being a tad on the sickly side, but Heather said she really didn't even look that bad. Her lungs sounded good, so she was almost certain she had a viral infection which resulted in a URI. She's on 10 (I think) days of Clavamox now.

LaVaughn and I both swear up and down that she's Bart's kitten. She looks identical to him, even when he was a kitten. I would almost put money on the fact that she's one of his babies, which warms my heart. I miss Bart so much and think of him often. Even more now, but it doesn't make me as sad as my memories of him. We've decided to name her Clementine, which fits her so well.

Cersei isn't too keen on the idea of having another kitten around, but she does seem to be warming up to her. Too bad Clementine wants absolutely nothing to do with poor Cersei.

Crappy picture, but isn't she cute??

I've actually (slowly) started getting back into sewing lately. I sewed not one, but TWO cage sets last week! It was so much fun and such a warm welcome back into the world of vending when my cage set sold literally two minutes after I posted it. She even bought another, but has yet to pay for it. I cut out a set today that I'll hopefully get around to sewing tomorrow.

Sewing and coffee go hand in hand.

This is the second set I did. It's one of my all time favorites.

In gaming news -- not sure if you know this or not, but Resident Evil 5 was released at the end of June. JUNE!! Do you realize how long we could have been playing this game?? It's only one of the best RE co-op games out there. As soon as I found out, I ordered it. Resident Evil 4 comes out at the end of this month. I'm dying...

Day before yesterday I had to drive my aunt to The Laser Spine Institute in Saint Louis. Boy what a day! The drive was effortless, but the waiting, that was the hardest part. I think LaVaughn and I sat out in the waiting area for over 3 hours! We watched what seemed like dozens of episodes of Like It or List is (not sure if that's the name) while we waiting on her to come out.

They had a dining area with free food -- mainly some creepy chips, chopped salad, half sandwiches and several different beverages (mainly hot teas and coffee). I got a coffee at one point, but had to throw it away due to its raunchiness. We left with a couple things of apple juice which we had yesterday.

My aunt got all of her day one testing done and thankfully she didn't have to go back until today to do the rest. Now all we can do is hope that they'll be able to help her out with a VERY minimal surgery.

Since we were in the neighborhood, we asked Christina if she would meet us and pick up the boys that had to be shipped. Since I haven't really talked about the gliders any, I'm referring to Nanook and Gendry. They'll be shipped to Florida and Maryland this Friday to meet their new mommies. #nervous

I guess that about sums up the past couple weeks. I live a very boring life, so not much can be expected in the way of thrills and excitement when I blog. Hopefully it's enough to keep you interested. Until next time...

Milla update!

So, I didn't blog about Milla at all yesterday, but that's because I was too busy/worried, so it didn't cross my mind.

Tuesday night Milla's leg swelled up even more, it continued to do this into Wednesday. Her entire leg started to swell after a while, even her poor little toes. This was like a hard swelling, like rock hard. After a while it started turning a deep red/purple color and looked awful. Even the back of her leg looked awful. Her flank started to swell last night, but it was retaining water, as was the back of her elbow area. So overall the swelling and coloration have gotten worse.

With that being said, her temperature has gone down to the 101 range, which is perfectly normal for a dog. She's also started eating more -- even canned food! After Tuesday, she started putting more pressure on her foot with each day. Today she's almost walking completely normal with just a slight limp.

I had to tell all of this to the vet today when I called. His reaction? "Well it's not what we were thinking, bring her on in and lets see if we can get some more fluid out of it." So off we went.

We were taken back nearly as soon as we walked in the door, which was such a huge relief. It didn't take him long to confirm Milla has "pitting edema", which most likely occurred from snake bite. He said to achieve bruising that severe, it would have to be from some type of bite or trauma. He even said that it almost has to be a bite, he just can't find the actual bite mark.

With that being said, Milla received a cortisone shot in the rump, an extra week of her two antibiotics and a weeks worth of a steroid/pain reliever combo. It was such a relief to hear him say that! Man, the stress and worry from the past few days was some how lifted in an instant. This drive home was much, much less tense than the drive home Monday.

In other news, I ran in Walmart to grab a few things on the way home while LaVaughn and Milla stayed in the car. While I was in there I saw a bunch of things on the clearance table, a few things in particular really stood out to me. One of those things being Jimmy Choo perfume for $10! I got two of those, two tubes of roll-on Flower perfume, some One Direction spray and some Aveeno face cream. I got ALL of that for under $35, can you believe it? I love when I'm able to find amazing bargains like that.

I guess that's all for now...

Dogs mysterious leg swelling...

So last night around 3:30 am when LaVaughn and I normally feed the cats and Milla, something went awry. When LaVaughn tried to get Milla to stand, she wouldn't! It was almost like she was paralyzed - it was absolutely terrifying! A panicked LaVaughn ran to the glider room where I was and told me. I quickly made my way to the living room where she was. After much coaxing, we were finally able to get Milla to the kitchen where we discovered she was favoring her right read leg. We were slightly relieved when we saw that she could walk on one of her legs and wasn't completely crippled.

Since Milla's on the hefty side, we just chalked it up to her pulling something and didn't think too much into it - she's stepped wrong before and hurt her leg, we figured it was something like that. We went to bed around 5 am and was up in a panic just after 7 am because Milla wouln't stand again. That's when we decided to head to the vet.

We got blankets down in the car and headed towards Fredericktown. I mentioned before we left the house that we should probably all before we go, just to be on the safe side. We stopped just at the start of C hwy and called. Just as I suspected, all of the vets were in surgery and the only opening they had was 3 pm. I called our other vet in Poplar Bluff and it was the same thing. The only difference is that they didn't have an opening slot and would have just had to work us in sometime after 1:30. We kept the guaranteed appointment and went back home.

We both went back to bed until just after noon, which I'm so grateful for.

It didn't take us long to make it to the vet and, of course, they were packed. Milla wasn't feeling good at all, so she slept almost the entire time in the waiting room, which is not her usual thing. We got Dr. Swinford and he recommended x-rays before anything. We were sent back to the waiting room while they took Milla to the back.

It was nearly 35 minutes before he came out and spoke to us. He told us that there was no breaks or fractures that he could see. I don't think I mentioned this, but her knee area was really swollen at this time. He aspirated some fluid from her leg and said that he honestly didn't know what it was. He said there were no white blood cells in it, which was odd. We was upfront with being unsure and recommended we take her to a specialist, She was also running a 105 degree temperature, which was super high. He ended up sending us home with two different antibiotics and some Metacam.

As of right now, her temperate has gone down to 102.6 -- it was 103 earlier, but it's gone back down. It actually went down some last night, which is amazing. She didn't feel well at all yesterday evening. She didn't eat her burgers from McDonald's, all she wanted to do was drink water and sleep. She wouldn't eat anything yesterday evening, but I did get her to eat some ham last night and super early this morning -- it's all she'll eat, so she's getting it.

She seems a little better today. Like I said, her temp is down, but her swelling isn't. The swelling got worse last night, which worries me. But, she does seem to feel better. I'm just hoping and praying that her antibiotics kick in soon and she's on the road to recovery. I have to call the vet tomorrow and give him an update. He's out today, which is why I can't call him today.

So there's that. Another hellish week of being on the brink of a nervous breakdown! Please keep Milla in your thoughts, prayers, meditations, or ANYthing that you do. It'll be much appreciated.

Milla at the vet yesterday:

This is her leg today:

Joeys and thangs...

It's been an extremely hot and humid evening today, but I braved it so that I could capture a few pictures of the joeys. I didn't include Petunia and Pansy in the lineup, mainly because these photos were taken outside (the girls are too old).

Speaking of, we're going to Columbia, Missouri tomorrow to meet up with their new mom. Never been to Columbia before, not that I can remember, anyways. We also have to go through Rolla, which I hear is a crappy area, plus we have to drive through Jeff city! It's going to be a long and interesting day, that's for sure.

I snapped a couple pictures of some flowers, but that's the extent. I've not been into taking pictures lately, so this was kind of forced in a way. Nothing has been the same since the end of April, it just hasn't.

Anyways, I do not want to go down that road. That's basically all I have to say, I'm not sure when I'll blog next. We're off to Columbia tomorrow, I have to take Sadie to the vet Thursday as well as help LaVaughn cook for the reunion that evening, then we leave for Eminence Friday evening, we have the reunion Saturday, then I have to work all day Sunday. It's going to be a very busy week.

If I could save time in a bottle...

I've put off blogging for SO long, I've almost forgotten how this all goes anymore. We've seriously had so much going on lately, blogging was the furthest thing from my mind. It's honestly still something I'm not sure I want to start back up. It's just really hard to throw away something that I've done for 8 years now, so you can see why I want to at least TRY and keep it going. I guess I'll see how this update of sorts goes and we'll go from here.

I'm going to address the most important updates first, back burner things will come last. Obviously, the most important subject over the past month has been Zoe, so we'll start there. My last blog was on Wednesday, May 25th. I was discussing that our old vet diagnosed Zoe with FIV and told us that she wouldn't recommend doing the surgery. She told us to watch the mammary mass on her belly and to let them know if it started to grow. That was NOT okay in my book, so like I stated in my last post I contacted two other vets and decided on Hick's Animal Hospital in Poplar Bluff.

Zoe's next vet visit was on June 1st at 4:00 in the evening. The vets office was packed, so we took this as a good sign. Our "old" vet in Fredericktown was never packed. After waiting, we finally got called back and got to speak with Dr. Hicks, a super nice lady that really seemed to know what she was talking about. She was kind of shocked by the size of her lump and said that it didn't feel like normal mammary tumors. She ran a CBC on Zoe, which still revealed the low WBC count -- it was 3200 this time. I'm not sure if it was an even 3000 last time and it went up some or what. Anyways, the vet didn't seem troubled by the count. She said it was low, but not low enough to postpone the surgery, which she wanted to do asap. She scheduled the surgery for the following Tuesday with a drop-off the day before.

Que nervousness!

Sunday night I could barely breath, eat or sleep. I worried non-stop and cried periodically throughout the day/night. Monday was even worse. I was completely out of it and felt like I was going to faint. We dropped Zoe off at the vet 15 minutes before closing. I've never felt so cruel and abusive in all of my life. I started crying in the vets office while the receptionist went to check on some things with Zoe's kennel. I was able to stop myself for a short while, but not for long. A man came out and took Zoe in her carrier. The look on her face as he carried her away was my breaking point. I turned to leave and barely made it out the door before I was in tears. I wasn't alone in this, LaVaughn was the same.

We sat in the car for a good 10 minutes before I was able to compose myself enough to drive. I finally stopped gasping for air and was able to pull out of the parking lot. Monday night was like a dream. Nothing seemed real, everything just kind of blurred together. Going to sleep was a welcome peace as I knew it would bring the next day quicker than sitting and worrying all night.

I woke up a little before 11 the next day and immediately called the vet to check on Zoe. Thankfully, she was out of surgery and in recovery! I was told to call back after two, which was a miserable wait. LaVaughn and I showered and headed towards Poplar Bluff just before two. I called from Piedmont to see how things were. I was put on hold for what felt like an hour as the lady went back to check on Zoe. She came back with the sweetest words I've heard in a long time.

"She did good, she's going good and she can be picked up after 4."

I thought I was going to faint! The drive to Poplar Bluff was one of the best and most peaceful drives I've had in a long time. Picking her up from the vet was such a warming feeling that I'll never forget. Getting her home was another, she was on cloud 9! Her incision also wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting, which was a good thing!

Then the dreaded waiting game began. They sent the tumor off Wednesday and said the university should get it Thursday and there was a small chance we would hear back from them Friday, but it would probably be Monday. Well, Monday came and went and there was nothing. I called early and late on Monday, but they hadn't heard anything. Same thing on Tuesday and again on Wednesday. When I called Wednesday (this was on the 15th) they said that if I hadn't heard from them by the following Wednesday (the 22nd) to give them a call back.

Well the following Wednesday came and still nothing. I was a bundle of nerves this day because I had a feeling that we would hear something today. Well I called around 2:30 and was told that the vet had received the results and she would be with me shortly. When she finally came to the phone she gave me the heartbreaking news... it was cancer. Our vet said the she really didn't think it was cancerous due to how confined it was. Of course, I asked what Zoe's chances were and what % she had of it coming back. The vet said that there's a 50% chance of it coming back, but she can't really use those guidelines because Zoe's tumor was so small. She said that she simply doesn't see them that small and they're always large and a mess by the time she see's them.

This is good news! This should (hopefully) greatly reduce the risk of reassurance. Fingers, toes, hairs and everything crossed! We could use ANY type of good thoughts, prayers or anything else you have to offer!

As of right now we're trying not to think about it and just continue our lives like normal. If we stay stressed out, she'll stay stressed out. We're trying to stay positive and think happy thoughts and just cherish the time we have with her.

One more update while I'm on the subject of cats. When we picked Zoe up from the vet, we stopped by Walmart and picked up a couple gorgeous asiatic lily plants. Well, they stayed inside for the first day, then were moved outside to enjoy some son. Late Wednesday night/early Thursday morning, we decided to move them inside. Well, shortly after we did that, I heard a crash coming from the kitchen. It was exactly what I suspected, Una knocked the plants over.

We rushed into the kitchen and picked them up. That's when we noticed a couple bite marks on the leaves. I immediately looked to see if lilies were poisonous to cats and was floored by what I read. Not only are they toxic, but they're one of the most deadly plants a cat can eat. It wasn't long after that, that LaVaughn found a missing leaf. We flew into panic mode and I was on the phone with an emergency vet. He told me to give her 1 tablespoon of peroxide to induce vomiting and to call back after. The only reason he suggested this was because it had been less than 20 minutes since she ate it.

Well forced it down her throat and waited in the bathroom with her to throw up. When that didn't work, we gave her another. She ran to the living room and (thankfully) started puking. And there it was, half a lily leaf. I was so relieved and thankful, you have no idea!

I tried to call our emergency vet again, but couldn't get through. I ended up calling one in Farmington and one in Perryville to ask what to do next. The one in Farmington said that she should be fine, but if we wanted to be extra cautious that we could bring her in and put her on an IV for 24 hours, but she didn't think that would be necessary. I tied and tried to get in touch with our vet again, but couldn't get through.

Around 6:30 that morning we finally decided to call it a night.

As soon as I got up the next day I called our vet and talked to the same guy. He concurred and said that she should be fine. I ended up calling close to 6 vets that day and got the same answers from all of them. LaVaughn and I were still sick about it and decided to take Una to the vet Friday to have her kidneys checked. After all, lily toxicity causes kidney failure, which leads to death within a few short days. LaVaughn took me to work Friday and took Una to the vet that evening for lab work.

Thank god everything came back normal! Her kidneys, liver and everything looked great. The vet (we were at Hillcrest this time) said that it takes a large amount of leaves to cause damage. Oh well, better safe than sorry. It wasn't all for nothing, though, it showed that Una's blood sugar levels were really high. She had just had a steroid shot a couple weeks before, which could be the cause, but he recommended that we get her re-tested in a few weeks just to be on the safe side.

So there's that. It was horrible, I was so sick over the entire thing, I wanted to die. I felt such a HUGE relief at work Friday evening when she called and told me, you have no idea. I'm hoping and praying that things are mellow for the rest of the year. My nerves honestly can't handle much more.

And needless to say the plants will NEVER be in the house again!

If all goes well I'll post a general update tomorrow with everything that's been happening over the last several weeks. Until then, thanks for reading...

And now, because I can, I'm going to spam you with loads of cat pictures from the past month(s):
